Beer and Beef

1/4 cup oil
2-1/2 pounds lean beef stew meat
4 small onions, sliced
1 garlic clove, chopped fine
1 teaspoon sugar
1 teaspoon mustard

1 (12-oz) can beer
1 teaspoon parsley flakes
1-1/2 bay leaves
1/2 teaspoon thyme
1 teaspoon pepper
1/2 cup water WITH 2 bouillon cubes

Brown beef in oil with onions and garlic. Add remaining ingredients. Place in 9x13-inch pan. Bake at 350
degreesF. for 1-1/2 hours or in crock pot for 8 hours. Cool 4 hours and remove fat that comes to the surface.
Refrigerate overnight. Next day, place meat in casserole. Butter enough bread to cover top of meat, with
garlic butter on one side and mustard on the other side; place on meat in casserole, mustard-side down.
Bake at 375 degreesF. for 1/2 hour or until tender. Serve hot. 4 servings
**Note: The alcohol in the beer burns off during cooking.
