Soft Pretzels
for the Bread Machine

1 cup lukewarm water
or beer
2 tablespoons sugar
1 tablespoon butter
or margarine
1 teaspoon salt
2-1/2 cups bread flour
2-1/2 teaspoon yeast
1 large egg
sesame seeds,
poppy seeds or coarse salt
Measure ingredients into baking pan. Select dough setting. Insert baking pan into unit; close lid. Take dough out when done, turn dough onto lightly floured board and divide into 4 equal portions. Larger pretzels, divide each portion into 2 sections and for smaller pretzels, divide each portion into four sections. Roll each section of dough into a thin rope about 12 to 16 inches long.

To shape pretzel, pick up ends of rope in each hand and curve into a circle, crossing ends at top. Twist ends once and lay down over bottom of circle. Brush with beaten egg and sprinkle lightly with sesame seeds, poppy seeds or coarse salt.

Bake in preheated 400 degree oven for 10-12 minutes or until lightly browned.
